I'm an American journalist traveling way outside my comfort zone, living for half a year in Tanzania and trying to cast a fresh pair of eyes on the complexities of development in one of the poorest places in the world.

A few photos, all from my first 24 hours in Africa. Maria decided immersion therapy was the way to introduce me, so a few hours after arriving late last Friday we joined a group on an overnight camp/hike at Lake Chala on the Kenya-Tanzania border. I was too dazed to refuse.

Kenya is on the other side of the lake; the trail took us within a few hundred yards but I don’t think we crossed the line.

Spectacular but challenging. I make no apologies for the beer.
