I'm an American journalist traveling way outside my comfort zone, living for half a year in Tanzania and trying to cast a fresh pair of eyes on the complexities of development in one of the poorest places in the world.

Blogging from Africa

I am indeed one Very Lost (Half) Tribesman. After 10+ years working as a professional journalist, I’m now on leave to spend 6 months or so in Africa, accompanying my wife on a research fellowship to Moshi, Tanzania, at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Though I love to travel, I’m probably, in all honestly, more of a Rome-and-Paris kind of guy than all this. Tanzania will certainly be an adventure.

A number of friends and family have asked me to chronicle my six months in Africa, so, for the first time in my life, I’ll be blogging. Perhaps they were just being polite; we’ll see how my traffic looks.

A few assurances to start: I won’t complain about the heat (much). I’ll keep things concise, and try to make every posting have a point. This won’t be a blow-by-blow diary of my time but something, I hope, a little bit more journalistic (whatever THAT means these days). I will try to mix the funny and serious and keep it moving - like a good “Scrubs” espisode.

And finally, I will make every effort not to turn into one of those sanctimonious expats who hectors those back home about how I’ve “found myself” and finally come to see the shortcomings of my Western upbringing. I have no idea whether I’ll come to feel that way or not; those who know me best would probably bet “no.” But if it happens I’ll exercise restraint in inflicting it on you.

So my blogging begins (with photos to follow later - dealing with a few technical problems). First post to follow shortly. Enjoy, subscribe and participate — trust me, I can handle reader feedback. Even your harshest criticisms, I’m sure, will pale in comparison to the parade of crazies who regularly e-mail me at work about my articles.
